Prompt 1: Team Mascot

I still have nightmares.

Whenever John Watson closes his eyes, he can see the blood pooling on the pavement, can still hear the ‘Goodbye, John’, can still feel the absence of a pulse. Sometimes he grits his teeth and goes back to sleep. Sometimes he goes to his blog and posts nothing.

Sometimes he visits Sherlock’s grave.

Sometimes he visits Dartmoor. He goes to the Cross Keys Inn, sits down in a plush chair by the fireplace, like they did the first time. He remembers that case, the details, every deduction Sherlock made, pulls it up to the front of his mind, tries to apply them to those nearby. The chair next to his stays empty.

Once, Henry Knight walks into the room, sees him sitting there, head bowed. He slips into the empty chair, head bowed as well. They sit in relative silence, the fireplace crackling and hissing in front of them.

“I still have nightmares.” Says Henry, finally breaking the silence.

“So do I.” He replies.

“And sometimes, I go back. To the edge of the hollow.” Henry continues.

“Do you think we’ll ever forget?” He asks instead, trying to push the blood and the fall and the empty silence away, close it off and lock it in one secluded corner of his mind.

“No.” Says Henry.

John closes his eyes and remembers the fall.
